Saturday 2nd of December 2023, “Becoming” was inaugurated: it was an art exhibition about travel illustration and photography; the first one where I presented my artist sketchbook masterpieces.

Finally, it concluded last Monday, the 22nd of January 2024. Even so, the travel continues through all the people who took part in the art exhibition and interacted with its artworks.

I’ll tell you how did it work. Let’s see together!

First of all, when we start traveling, we always depart from a starting point. Ours was the entrance of the República de Las Letras: here, in one of the most well-known libraries of Córdova – artistically and culturally, we started to put ourselves in traveler’s shoes and get in touch with the “Becoming” project.

So, imagine walking around the art exhibition as if you were in a Medina and finding an unbelievable surprise: a pen, some Post-its, and a question.

In this way, many were the people who left their thoughts in a note, their mark on the art exhibition; the same thing happens when we travel and get enriched by meeting others.

About the exhibition

“Becoming” is an illustration and photography exhibition. I realized all Its artworks during my first travel to Morocco. That travel has somehow changed me in a way I can’t describe through words, but through art, through my travel sketchbook.

“Becoming”. I chose this word because it talks about movement.

We all come from a placeーour roots, our past, we pass through anotherーour present, and we leaveーour future.

Inside of this movement, that’s life, we can give ourselves the great opportunity of traveling; which permits us to know ourselves and the other. When I speak of the other, I mean someone different from us, who’s sharing this earth and living this epoch, but who’s doing it through a different filter, a different way of living. Our environment affects our convictions, our experience shapes our idea of freedom or possibility. Thus, a travel can not only bring us out of our reality, but give us the chance to change, too; as long as we are willing to open our eyes and question ourselves.

With this exhibition, for the first time, I’m sharing publicly my travel sketchbook, my way of filtering the reality and traveling. With this exhibition, “Becoming”, I close this year that started in Morocco and follows with art.

About me

I’m Sofia, in art Syamhope. I’m a traveler creative and a professional artist. I work with several styles and techniques related to the illustration, painting and comic field. I develop artistic projects focusing on the social-cultural aspects thanks to my formation and interest in the human sciences and linguistic mediation.

I decided to apply as well among the painters and Urban Sketchers, choosing the rapid painting category.

By my side, it was interesting taking part in this initiative to try the experience of painting in a cemetery. Otherwise, I might never thought about it.

Infact, to me is quite intense to visit this kind of place; even so, many think about cemeteries as peaceful sites, where you can meet yourself and others, too. In general, it could represent a moment dedicated to thinking of and celebrating life.

And you? If you had the chance to paint in a cemetery, would you take it?

As you can guess from these images, the place I chose to paint, differs from the representation of the cemetery view, preferring a symbolic landscape:

the olive tree, a metaphor for life that shades until reaching the sky.

Moreover, the palette I used has blue-green tones creating some points of orange contrasts. In this way, I could talk not just about the place, but transmit the emotions it was sharing, too.

The selected paintings were made by artists such as Jaime Jurado and Pedro Orozco, as well as Camilo Huéscar, Miguel Repollés, Dolores García, and Fernando Angulo. Anyway, the other artworks also remain available to organize a collective art exhibition by the Town Hall of Córdoba and Cecosam (the Cordobese public funeral agency).

Introduction

During the last weekend, for the first time, I traveled to Ubrique, a village in Cádiz, South Spain. This village is remarkable for its leathercraft above all: infact, even though its on-site production stopped, its tradition is still ongoing and very present in the leather processing and artisanal maroquineries making. 

Moreover, Ubrique is well known as part of the “Ruta de los pueblos blancos”, a root to visit a number of Andalusian villages characterized for being completely white; also, precisely for this reason, as soon as you reach the village, it stands out on the background of the green hills surrounding it. These places usually origin from the Arabic tradition and their geographic position is related to the defense role they used to have the past.

Generally, apart its beauty, Ubrique definitely surprised me with its energy: numerous events, a lot of sport along the streets, vitality and desire to be part of the people life.

Among the activities, I specifically had two opportunities for which I’m grateful to the Association La Casa Azul, the team of professional creatives that supported me, and Remedios Rubiales Domínguez for welcoming us in her land.

Dedicatee to Pedro Lobato Hoyos, opening of Ayuna Kanatkalieva’s art exhibition and La Casa Azul live performance

In the first case, on the 1st of September, the art gallery Galería Proyecto 5 opened with a dedicatee to Pedro Lobato Hoyos, one of the reference painters in Ubrique. We remembered him thanks to María Belén Lobato, her daughter, and Remedios, the artist and owner of the gallery. Then, we inaugurated the art exhibition of Ayuna Kanatkalieva, from Russia, with a live performance with La Casa Azul.

On this occasion, I participated as part of the La Casa Azul team, with a face painting improvisation. The painting I realized is completely inspired by Yeska‘s music, while, at the same time, Noé Serrano was improvising a live digital sculpture. For me, in these moments of impro it’s important to work a lot on the contact with the person, and for this, I thank also Elena for letting her go in this experience led by art.

In addition, I find it important to mention our audio-visual technicians such as Backstage Academy, Sarel Visuals, and Pilar Campos, who created the magic of the scenario and documented the event. 

XII Plein Air Rapid Painting Competition of Ubrique

“Pedro Lobato Hoyos”

September 2023 – Sofia Candeo (Syamhope) receives the 17° prize

In the second case, Saturday 2 September, I’ve decided to adventure in the XII Concurso de Pintura Rápida al Aire Libre of Ubrique “Pedro Lobato Hoyos”. This contest is one of the most important pictorical events of Ubrique where a great number of painters from the whole Spain gather together to paint the city outside. 

But… What does it mean “Rapid painting”? And what does the competition consist of?

We talk about rapid painting when, with a limit of time, we have to create an artwork from a usually blank canvas – sometimes it is permitted also to present a monochrome surface. In this specific case, we also had a limit regarding the topic since we must represent Ubrique and its cultural, human, and environmental heritage.

The result was that, among all the participants, we represented a different perspective of the village, even though the common pattern was surely the landscape. Moreover, the techniques applied were different including oil painting, acrylics, and watercolors. Besides this, one of the prized artworks was completely out of the box and was made using a collage of various materials, such as plastic and wood.

There were around 90 painters to present in the competition, and among them, I had the huge honor of seeing my artwork selected for the 17° prize of the XII Plein Air Rapid Painting Competition of Ubrique. If I think about it, it’s nice to me that this prize was sponsored by the transport company Transportes y Excavaciones Rubiales, considering my strong connection with the topic of traveling. Apart from that sponsors like them are an important source to support creation and to realize this kind of event.

To conclude, I think that the best part of it was to share this experience with other artists: it’s something that makes you really understand that exists a community of people who bet on art, even by their own manners, and art is to share. Moreover, getting to know a lot of other considerable authors is also a great source of inspiration and good energy.

Welcome back to Story Time by Antonio Panareo, we are in the radio space of Radio Canale Italia together with Sofia, who is an artist, Syamhope it’s her name, let’s say into her creative phase, let’s say how she signs her creations.

Syamhope: Thank you very much

Antonio Panareo: Thank you for accepting our invitation. for being here at Story Time

Syamhope: It’s a pleasure

Antonio Panareo: Then, tell a bit about yourself, how did you start craving art? Because backstage you told me that you didn’t really follow the classic path that anyone would imagine

Syamhope: Well… No, let’s say that to me art has always been, you know, a way to escape, a way to travel, then yes

Antonio Panareo: A way to travel, to grow apart…

Syamhope: Also, maybe in some way both of them, then I have always loved making custom gifts therefore I have always tried to use art to look at the world and well, also to create stuff, new points of view, new perceptions

Antonio Panareo: But what is the first type of art that fascinated you? The one that made you say: “Well, let’s try”?

Syamhope: Well, I’m in love with colors, I can remain hours staring just at colors, so yes, they have always fascinated me and led me to experiment a lot in painting, and try

Antonio Panareo: Therefore, especially painting, but I know you also are into sculpture sometimes

Syamhope: Well, not really sculpture, but I like artisanal creations, therefore handmade, from earrings to recycling, to reusing, which nowadays is defined as upcycling…

Antonio Panareo: Of course, thus giving a new life, that perhaps is even better than recycling – because recycling implies that you take some material, let’s say, an object, and split it up to eventually make something else, whereas upcycling means you actually reuse it directly without making…

Syamhope: Yes, you reuse it, but you completely change its use

Antonio Panareo: Exactly, its use, even better, you improve it because, in fact, it’s about upcycling, not down-cycling, obviously… Great, then, another thing that I wanted to try to get better from you, it’s the travel dimension, because you told me that undoubtedly art is a way to grow apart, to travel itself, but the same travels made you expand your artistic path

Syamhope: Yes, at the start I started to travel alone in Italy, a little by going to meet some friends, a little on my own, then I started to travel abroad and right now I’m in Cordoba, indeed

Antonio Panareo: Okay

Syamhope: Yes, I came back some days, I’ve taken advantage of it

Antonio Panareo: Great, we did the same to get you here, as our guest. What do you like about Cordoba or what surprised you?

Syamhope: Uhm, maybe in some way its magic, the fact that art is something right there on the streets, in the people

Antonio Panareo: Sure

Syamhope: There is lots of reading culture, they read a lot, poetries as well as books, there’s a lot of music and in general art culture, there are many artists all around, this is something I’m really fond of

Antonio Panareo: And compared to Italy, do you think that Italy or whatever the Padua dimension doesn’t rather have the same impact as that culture brought to the street has?

Syamhope: Well, maybe Padua it’s a bit shy about some things…

Antonio Panareo: A bit closed

Syamhope: Not closed, but shy because in reality there are many artists anyway but…

Antonio Panareo: Is there less interaction?

Syamhope: Yes, maybe

Antonio Panareo: All right, another curiosity I have – I apologize if the question might sound banal or dumb, free to not answer, to send me to hell – I wanted to ask you: how have you made your art or, anyway, a great dose of your passion, a job as well? I mean, I imagine that most of the time, such as it happens to me as a speaker, people tell you: “But what’s your job? I’m an artist or I’m a speaker”, and usually they answer me: “No, your real job?” Does it happen to you the same? 

Syamhope: It happens to me a lot, we get each other

Antonio Panareo: I don’t know if this thing makes me feel better but…

Syamhope: I don’t know but I take it a bit easy meaning that in the end if you don’t do something you like you come back home tired, with no energy, and… I don’t know, I think you don’t really live, so first of all I needed to believe it, I mean, I needed to get out of this idea that art, being an artist can’t be a job

Antonio Panareo: okay

Syamhope: It can be a job, and I have decided that this is my path

Antonio Panareo: Maybe, that’s the point, it’s amazing that art isn’t a job meaning that it isn’t the typical canonic occupation but if want to live with it, obviously you need to schedule, organize, also to take advantage of the good moments you have in the same way

Syamhope: Yes, let’s say that if you are an artist o if you have other jobs out of the routine, you don’t have your present already packed and prepared, you need to create it by yourself and, to say the truth, it’s something I really like. Finally, it’s like a challenge, you need to get out of your comfort zone 

Antonio Panareo: That’s right

Syamhope: In my case, I started by changing my point of view and understanding that what I was doing is worthy and that it is my path, I mean I like many things but what makes me feel good it was and it is art, creating

Antonio Panareo: There you are! Since we still have some minutes, I wanted to ask you what you are working on right now – if you can share it, and what you would like to achieve, what is your next ambition, your next challenge?

Syamhope: Well, right now I’m working between illustration and comic, especially I’m also collaborating with several artists in Cordoba – such as Rafael Bilcor and Marlem with whom I exhibited the most, and then also with an association called La Casa Azul, which has a cultural approach, meaning that it tries to help people that would normally get emarginated and it tries to do it through art

Antonio Panareo: That’s nice

Syamhope: …also it tries to create a group of artists, perhaps what I was missing here

Antonio Panareo: Nice, that being shy which maybe there isn’t there in Spain, that you can’t find at first compared to Padua

Syamhope: I don’t know, maybe it is a different approach

Antonio Panareo: Sure, but look, the important thing is that you feel good, be it here, in Thailand, or Japan, who cares, I mean…

Syamhope: Yes, everyone has their own place

Antonio Panareo: Yes, there is no law, one could find their dimension in Cinisello Balsamo so to speak, or in Pizzo Calabro, anyway the important thing is that you feel good, you find your lifeblood for yourself, your art. It made me smile that since you mentioned “La Casa Azul” you have started to slightly get that manner of talking, that marvelous accent of someone who lives in the double phase of the Italian and Spanish language, great!

Syamhope: Yes, I need to switch, to change the language

Antonio Panareo: Of course, but look you are even too good, but to me it’s cute, I mean it’s a nice thing, it wasn’t a critic – to be clear, anyway as you heard the arrangement remembers us that the radio time is always more infamous than I wished, then to conclude I’ll ask you which are your contacts, such as your web social to follow you and also to reach you for you jewelry

Collective art exhibition of painting and poetry

In December, I was honored to take part in the collaboration with the artistic collective Síntesis from Montilla, Spain.

I participated as Sofia Syamhope with my illustration “El paso del tiempo” (“Time passing by”) made right for the purpose.

Moreover, this illustration was particularly selected as cover masterpiece for the calendar 2023.

Indeed, the illustration represents the cycle of life, the constant change that every one of us lives. We are people, we are like books, that write and are written by ongoing daily experiences.

In addition, the change and the lifeblood are represented by the shape of a tree, which remebers as well the logo of the Síntesis collective.

Today, the artistic collaboration continues: the “Año Sintético” exhibition arrives also in Córdoba, on the 24th February, at the Hotel Averroes.

The Bubble of Indifference (in Italian “La Bolla dell’Indifferenza”) is an oil painting that took part in the XIII Combat Prize Edition.

It describes the contemporary presence of two opposite situations: conflict and peace. It specifically highlights the feeling of living in a world based on appearance and comfort, yet extremely fragile at the same time; as a soap bubble, it could burst suddenly. In this daily routine, it is important to live every moment, war and brutality might be perceived with indifference, as they were happening far away from us, almost not possible.

On the contrary, outside of this comfort zone, there’s also a different reality: a world where people have to face the loss of their certainty and the destruction of their security; where the social and material contest bursts leading to solitude and neglect.

Quarantine feelings is a collective project created by the Argentinian artist Camila Fawape.

Everyone felt differently during the pandemic; some people took advantage of the lockdown to dedicate more time to their interests, while others felt trapped and strongly limited.

Therefore the purpose of the project is to offer creative inspiration to fight that feeling of being locked and transmit new ones. Indeed, a creative mind can really find a way out of the trap when it dialogues with the exterior, whereas a lockdown can obstacle it.

By taking part in the collective project Quarantine Feelings, every artist had the chance to express theirselves and creat a new masterpiece inspired by Camila’s tracks.

I also joined the project among poets and musicians. I let the inspiration coming through the notes of Marta, a track that almost sounds as an Argentinian Tango and mixes different styles.

The News On T-shirt project has been created with the desire of making artistic T-Shirts that also carry a message within.

Its mission is to share interesting topics, information, ideas, through a new alternative and customized mean, T-shirts!

Thanks to the variety of the topics, everyone can chose to wear their favorite news or theme of interest.

For instance, the topic I chose is the existing relation between pollution and health.
